MLK Capital Student Leadership Weekend

Local youth learn about community activism through a weekend of service and celebration.

Twenty-nine youth from various Central Florida high schools participated in the MLK Capital Student Leadership Weekend 2010, as a part of Elevate Youth Achievement, a program of the Community Service Center and Family Services. Elevate Youth Achievement seeks to raise the bar in academic excellence for our Orange, Osceola and Seminole county youth in 8th – 12th grade. Students are prepared for post-secondary education, employment, life management and community engagement. This two day trip emphasized the value of education and community activism to underprivileged and foster youth.

More than 30 Florida A&M University students and administrators met with our students in the Student Government Assembly’s Senate Chambers. Students also received an after-hours tour of the Black Achieves Research Center, viewed a step show by Florida State University’s (FSU) Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and Delta Sigma Theta sorority, listened to notable author Juan Chisholm speak about how to become an agent for community change and volunteered with FSU’s Jumpstart Tallahassee program in collaboration with the Tallahassee Housing Authority. Additionally, the students were able to participate in Tallahassee’s annual NAACP MLK Memorial Service and March to City Hall amongst thousands of fellow Floridians.

The Orlando Magic served as the primary corporate sponsor for this event. Contact Whitnee Dillard at for more information.
